I thoroughly enjoyed this book written by a professor of mine at Colby On the one hand, it is a compelling tale of a young boy of Jewish descent living in Germany during WWII The book addresses how he and his family grapple with everyday difficulties, family issues and WWII atrocities The alternating accounts from the mother s diary full of worry and concern and the spirited young boy s antics and musings make for a terrific combination On the other hand, I loved reading a book by my former professor I feel like it revealed a little bit to me about someone I had known and whose fabulous cooking I had enjoyed and shed new light on his life How often do you know the author of a book after all Further, I have spent a good deal of time in Germany and visited many of the places that are discussed in the book It was interesting to hear them described during a different era Plus, as a enthusiastic cook myself, I particularly enjoyed the various sections about food and cooking The descriptions conjured up particular scents and memories for me Why isn t there a good German bakery nearby Alas.I would certainly recommend this book to anyone and find that it portrays a personal and touching account from the WWII era.

This was an excellent memoir fictional account of a boy surviving Nazi and post Nazi Germany The words really felt like they were flowing out of the boy s mouth and I was never distracted by wondering what was true or what was changed I had recently made a trip to Southern Germany for family reasons and his descriptions of the area and customs brought me right back.

Kueter s Bildungsroman is a treasure Written in a casual manner, it is reminiscent of sitting around the fire and hearing a tale from a grandparent about their past Horst s many miraculous escapes from great misfortune are delightful as are the culinary adventures as well The only question I was left with at the end was what happened to Brigitte when they got the United States
