Spar is an unrepentant and harrowing story Anyone who reads the first sentence can tell you that However, it s much than that This is art as a dark mirror Essentially, Spar is the acid test as to whether you want to be entertained by literature, or edified It doesn t have a grand arc, exciting plot development and characters you can really root for in a fist pumping way Instead it dwells on the traumatising and corrosive potential of relationships with death, or escaping with the remnants of your life, being the only hopes for change. It s really important with this story to focus on what it means, what the purposes of it is If you don t do that you end up wallowing in a sordid mess of alien sex and a very real discomfort There s to it than that, and it requires you to focus Despite the story describing aliens and escape pods the context here is much closer to home It s about communication and being trapped It s about damaging and broken relationships, when you suddenly realise you don t know who you re sleeping with If you don t have any frame of reference on that then you re a lucky person. It s best to heed Johnson s own words on Spar For her, it s a story about what can happen as the people we love turn into non communicative aliens with whom we share a bed And a story about sex with an alien because it s that or die of boredom All the other things the weird Stockholm Syndrome dynamic the fear of leaving a familiar situation, however horrific the cruelty that comes from familiarity evolved in the rewrite It s interesting to me how what I saw as the primary and very obvious theme of the story is the one people notice least. In some ways I m the lucky one, because having written it I can walk away Readers are stuck with it in their minds She s right, it s unforgettable, affecting in a really savage way It s not nice, but it is excellent.

I don t really have an issue with the supposed gross nature I don t mind graphic or violent narration That is not the reason for the 1 star rating.I just didn t get it at all I generally don t understand any of the experimental weird and this feels like one of them And I didn t get this either I didn t understand or like anything.I ve been told now after I finished reading that it s a metaphor for being in a relationship without understanding and only sex That was not evident to me I m letting the rating stay at 1 star.

First things first WTF I read a review Unsung Stories and then I understood what is was about But it is a short story that in the end has nothing to do with sci fi and well, if I need an explanation, either it is really not for me or it is bad I am going to go with the former but.

This is an absurd stream of consciousness about human alien copulation It is a kind of long winded and romanticised tale of interspecies and intergalactic violence and rape The profanity feels tackled on and is either for pure shock value or to convey a kind of black humour In fact what it reads most like is one of those 4 chan posts where thirteen year olds try to be as outrageous and sexual as possible and at the same time pretend that the fetish pornography their writing has some deeper, richer meaning It is also fake the sexual undertones are clearly not the author s actual sexual fantasy This faux sexy tale is just her trying to be the woman who writes sex in an explicit manner in order to subvert traditional gender roles that suggest women are weak, passive and asexual but she ends up ironically, reinforcing these stereotypes by showing she has no real interest in graphic or kinky sex which is why she writes it with no excitement or passion The alien story which explains the union of these two unlikely lovers is scarcely there It is erotic pulp with hundred year old cliches about colliding star ships and such nonsense Her human lover whom she tells us about in flashbacks is so bland I don t know if I forgot his name or she simply never told us it He does wonderfully original, romantic things like quote poetry and Shakespeare and she does the modern cliche of being the woman who just wants sex and tells him she does not want to listen to pretty words another tired attempt at gender role reversal that never rings true Especially as she lets him read it to her in the end anyway and seems to enjoy it and certainly remembers the incident with notable clarity something you would only expect from someone who recalls the event tenderly and fondly The weak and utterly over done in literature underlying metaphor, seems to concern how tiring and soul crushing emotionless, pointless sex for mere fleshly pleasures can get There are pointless graphic scenes that seem to serve to highlight the frailty of the human body as if this sad point about our vulnerable biology has not been made for eons The will she be rescued or languish in the be slimed clasp of his assailing tentacles forever subplot and the ending where it looks like she won t escape but then lo and behold is suddenly saved, was sadly predictable A rehashed again and again, plot twist of a plot twist that people should consider forgoing.

In the tiny lifeboat, she and the alien fuck endlessly, relentlessly So begins this gross little short story, which, sadly, just gets worse from there There s almost no plot of which to speak A mid space collision between two starships results in two survivors one human, one alien climbing into a very tiny lifeboat together And then fucking Endlessly Relentlessly Disgustingly But not, it should be stated, pornographically There is nothing titillating about their sex In fact, it s not even clear that having sex is what they mean to do hence the title, Spar Still, this story is most definitely not my cup of tea, and it comes as quite a shock, too, since Johnson is obviously capable of writing pieces much interesting and much thought provoking than this dreck Bleack

I have no interest for alien sex, but I have enjoyed the rather rare occurrences I ve read in the past.Until now.The experience of reading this short story is at the opposite pole of enjoyment I didn t enjoy it If I can still make sense of the concept of enjoyment.I had no problem finishing it it s a very short story , if there was , I don t think I would have read it Maybe It s a mix of erotica and horror, where both erotica and horror refer to the same thing in a science fiction setting It makes sense It provokes old questions seen in a new light But alien sex, truly alien sex, is a auto contradictory concept in a way it has to be too alien and intimate in the same time Maybe that s the source of horror.I think this read is guaranteed to remain on my mind for a while It s probably a good story I ll have to reserve judgment until another read.
